Abstract

In Newness in Old Testament Prophecy: An Intertextual Study Henk Leene examines the relations between the new song raised in the Psalms, the new things concealed in Deutero-Isaiah, the new heaven and the new earth announced in Trito-Isaiah, Ezekiel’s new heart and the new spirit, and the envisioned new creation and new covenant in Jeremiah. Where these promises were mainly linked form-critically, Henk Leene assumes their direct literary relations. In what direction does the one promise allude to the other, and how do such allusions draw us into a continuing intertextual dialogue on Israel’s expectations about the future? Most challenging is Leene’s conclusion that Jeremiah’s promise of the new covenant presumes the newness passages from both Ezekiel and Isaiah.

Abstract

Western biblical studies have tended to follow either faith-based theological approaches or value-free historical-critical methods. This monograph challenges the two extremes by pursuing the middle path of philosophical hermeneutics. While drawing on Eastern and Western philosophical writings from ancient to modern times, the author proposes original interpretive solutions to a wide range of important biblical texts, including the Akedah, Second Isaiah, the Decalogue, Qohelet, Job, and Jeremiah. Yet, this is not a collection of antiquarian studies. Readers will also gain fresh and stimulating perspectives concerning monotheism, religious faith and identity, suffering and salvation, and modern and postmodern ethics. Finally, in a supplementary essay, the author introduces readers to the history of Old Testament studies in Japan, and he outlines prospects for the future.

Abstract

"Rewritten Bible After Fifty Years presents the papers of a conference on the meanings and usages of the term Rewritten Bible introduced by Geza Vermes in 1961. Leading scholars of the topic discuss their new insights and ideas comparing with Vermes' initiative, whose participation on this conference was unfortunately the last chance for a life dialogue with him on this topic. Apart from the terminological discussions and comparisions several case studies widen the scope of the notion of Rewritten Bible/Scripture and rewriting as a genre and technique"--

Abstract

This volume examines the use of citation formulae in the Old Testament. After demonstrating the lack of consensus and method in the treatment of such exegetical devices, the author addresses the need for a sustained examination of citation formulae and related expressions. This inquiry focuses on the careful identification of the referents of citation bases as a basis for the study of inner-biblical exegesis. Further insights are offered on the development of such exegetical devices, the hermeneutics of the post-exilic community, and the syntax of comparative statements in Hebrew.

Abstract

Amidst various methodologies for the comparative study of the Hebrew Bible, at times the opportunity arises to improve on a method recently introduced into the field. In YHWH is King , Flynn uses the anthropological method of cultural translation to study diachronic change in YHWH’s kingship. Here, such change is compared to a similar Babylonian development to Marduk’s kingship. Based on that comparison and informed by cultural translation, Flynn discovers that Judahite scribes suppressed the earlier YHWH warrior king and promoted a creator/universal king in order to combat the increasing threat of Neo-Assyrian imperialism. Flynn thus opens the possibility, that Judahite scribes engaged in a cultural translation of Marduk to YHWH, in order to respond to the mounting Neo-Assyrian presence.
